Catarina Moreira Rato
I am a BACP Senior Accredited counsellor, supervisor and EMDR Accredited practitioner with over 17 years experience.
I work with individuals and couples presenting with a wide range of issues. I am a trauma informed counsellor and have extensive experience in safely working with trauma, PTSD, sexual abuse as well as addictions, bereavement and loss.
I work with a Person-Centred approach and I take the view that people are able to find their own ways of dealing with life’s challenges. I encourage you to trust in your ability to make changes and appreciate your own resources. My clients often find that the insight and awareness that comes from the counselling process can help them find a fresh appreciation of who they are and new ways of dealing with difficult issues. I am an integrative therapist with over 15 years experience working with a diverse range of clients. I am happy to work 1-1 or with couples, and provide a non judgemental, safe and confidential setting for both long and short term counselling. I initially trained as a person centred therapist and have added to that my interest in mindfulness, particularly the experiencing of our bodies as a powerful way to explore self acceptance and move on from old controlling patterns. I receive regular supervision and have never lost my enthusiasm and curiosity in a job that I very much love and feel privileged to do. I am an accredited and fully insured member of the BACP, and follow their ethical framework, consistently achieving measurable and lasting positive outcomes. I am happy to work with most presenting issues, and am flexible with my availability, so please contact me with any questions, or to arrange an initial meeting. As well as providing therapy, I am also a qualified supervisor with many years experience of offering support and guidance to new and experienced therapists.

I have been working as a counsellor for over 15 years with clients across a wide range of issues gaining particular experience of: loss, bereavement, anxiety, depression, stress, and trauma.
I offer a warm and steadying presence, working in an embodied way that enables clients to bring and explore their experience in ways that feel right and make sense to them.
Accredited and registered with the BACP, I am qualified as a counsellor and a supervisor.
I have received specific training for working with trauma but how I work continues to be guided by the beliefs and values of the person-centred approach. Through my work with trauma I have grown to appreciate how much our nervous system influences how we feel and connect.

I am a fully qualified integrative counsellor and clinical supervisor with over 10 years of experience working in the Brighton & Hove area. I am a registered member of the BACP and adhere to their ethical framework. Alongside my private practice, I work for a Sussex based charity that supports survivors of sexual abuse. Through this work I have in-depth experience of counselling within a trauma-informed framework.
I value the importance of building a respectful and empathic relationship with my clients. I believe that this in turn allows for the client to feel understood and safe enough to explore issues in their life that may be causing distress.
I have a particular interest in attachment theory and how early relationships can set up enduring and sometimes problematic beliefs about the self. My approach is to invite compassionate curiosity around how these patterns came to be, especially if they no longer appear to be helpful for the client. This insight then paves the way for an acceptance and understanding of the past as well as offering opportunities to experiment with new ways of being both inside and outside of the therapy room.
